Guide to concessions and other help

There are a number of concessions and other kinds of help available if you're 50 or over. They may make it easier for you to afford or do the things you want to — including looking after yourself, travelling for less and getting a free TV licence.

What help is available

National and local charities and other not-for-profit organisations can be a useful source of help, advice and support for older people and their carers. Some large national charities have local branches, which offer a wide range of services and social activities.

Free passports

If you're a British national and born on or before 2 September 1929, you can apply for a free standard 32-page ten-year passport from the Identity and Passport Service.

Bus passes and travel for over 60s

Bus or coach travel is often a cheap option for your journey. There are also many travel concessions on offer on the buses to make getting out and about even more affordable.

Anyone aged 60 or over who is resident in England is entitled to free off-peak local bus travel anywhere in England using a National Bus Pass.

In Wales, if you're over 60, you're entitled to a free bus pass from your local authority that you can use it at any time of the day on all local bus services in Wales.

In Scotland, if you're 60 or over you're entitled to free local bus and scheduled long-distance coach services within Scotland at any time of the day.

Everyone aged 65 or over living in Northern Ireland can travel on buses and trains for free with a Senior SmartPass.

Senior Railcard

If you're 60 or over, you can save a third on most standard and first-class rail fares throughout Britain when you buy a Senior Railcard. It makes travelling by train more economical and accessible.

Free TV licences

If you're aged 75 or over you're entitled to a free television licence. If you're 74, you can apply for a short-term licence to cover the months until you reach 75. You can also get TV licence concessions if you live in residential care.

Independent Living Fund

If you are under 66 and severely disabled, you may be entitled to money from the Independent Living Fund to help pay for personal and domestic care.

Medical checks and support

Regular medical checks are available to help you to spot any potential medical problems. Some health services may be available to you for free or at a concessionary rate – such as sight tests, dental care, prescriptions and immunisations. Support is also available for instances of elder abuse.
